Sometimes a slap from Spirit is all we need to remind us how important taking care of Self really is...
This message has come up for me about 100 times this week (ok maybe in exaggerating a little, but it's been a LOT!), and as I drove home from dropping the girls off at school, I had this conversation with myself, about my self-care...or lack thereof. 😬
Then as I get home and pop on the comp to work, yet again another message of "what's your self care routine?" pops up and smacks me in the face. #GodSmack
My old pastor (#RickWarren) once said something in a service that I'll never forget:
"We make time for the things that are important to us."
Such a simple statement, but SO true.
We always say we "don't have time" to pour into our own cup, yet seem to find time to mindlessly scroll Facebook, which ironically, makes us feel even worse and more depleted. 😶
So the convo with myself this morning went something like this:
“You need to schedule in daily self care, because it's so important. If I literally put it on my calendar every day, even just 15 minutes to sit alone in the sunshine, THAT is self care. THAT is pouring into your cup. THAT is taking care of your Self.”
See here's the hard truth, according to that nugget from #PastorRickWarren: If we're not making time for self care, we are straight up saying, "I'm not important to me." Try saying that out loud every day to yourself in the mirror. It sounds terrible! Almost abusive!😳
The flip side is I think we get so caught up in "self care" being expensive or extensive, it becomes a "keeping up with the Self Care Joneses"! Yes, self care can be a $60 Mani and Pedi, a $75 massage, or an hour long rose-pedal-ridden luxiurious bath, but it doesn't have to be that, either. It can be as simple as taking 5 minutes to put everything down, go outside and get some fresh air and sunshine (I'm a #CaliGirl, sunshine in December is a given😆). Or 10 minutes to journal everything we're grateful for that day. It doesn't have to look the same every day. It doesn't have to take a lot of money or a lot of time. It just has to be time that you intentionally spend ALONE, enjoying yourself, enjoying that moment.
So I'm committing to making ME important again. At least 5 minutes a day, to step away from work and worries and the world and come back to Center. It'll look different every day, and it may not be what everyone else is doing, but I've always been a rebel. 😉
BTW, I started immediately. I was SO tempted to jump back on the comp and keep working on our website, but I heard the Message loud and clear, so I dropped everything, went outside, sat in the sun and meditated. It was EXACTLY what my soul was craving. Now it's your turn. :) XO,
